Catherine Bastien

Bio for Website: I am a self‑taught artist with a deep love for paper and photography. While revisiting old family photographs, I realized how much creativity shaped the generations before me — a father working with wood and iron, a mother making lace, a grandmother embroidering, and great‑grandparents crafting lace patterns that still remain in our family. My own work has long centered on paper in all its forms: collage, papier‑mâché, sculpture, folded structures. Paper is humble, versatile, and endlessly surprising. Bringing thread into photographs felt natural — a way to honor my family’s craft while giving memories new life. Through embroidery, lace‑inspired patterns, and beads, I add texture that reveals new layers of meaning. A simple image becomes something deeper, joyful, or mysterious. I hope these pieces spark emotion and connection. And for those who feel drawn to this work, I’d be pleased to create something that speaks to your story.

Materials and Techniques: Photographs, pictures, and postcards are more than images — they’re fragments of memory we keep for ourselves or send to someone we care about.
So what could be more natural than giving these memories texture, depth, and a new voice?
I work with these paper supports and transform them through thread, embroidery stitches, lace‑inspired patterns, and delicate beads.
Each piece becomes art that refuses to stay flat — a creation where the image begins to speak, inviting emotion, curiosity, and connection.
