Marija Hamed

Bio for Website: Marija Maja is an abstract visual artist whose work reinterprets nature through layered color, organic forms, and subtle textures. Inspired by seasonal rhythms and everyday moments, her paintings explore the balance between movement and stillness, creating pieces that feel both calming and dynamic. Working in mixed media, Marija builds each piece intuitively over several days and weeks, allowing depth and texture to emerge through layered mark-making. She offers original paintings alongside a curated selection of fine art prints, with select print reproductions also carried at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston's Store. She maintains an active studio practice in Arlington.

Materials and Techniques: My work begins intuitively rather than from a fixed plan. I start with initial marks, colors, or textures, then build slowly, layer by layer, over days and weeks, allowing each piece to evolve as I return with a fresh perspective.

Working in mixed media, including acrylic, gouache, acrylic ink, watercolor, pastel, and graphite, I create depth through layered color, organic forms, and subtle texture. My process involves adding, removing, and refining until the piece feels balanced, transforming early movement into a sense of cohesion and calm.
