Marina Rakhlin

Bio for Website: Marina Rakhlin lives in Brookline and works primarily in watercolor, pen and ink, filling her sketchbooks with colorful city scenes. Marina fell in love with sketching urban landscapes during the year she spent in Barcelona, and coming back to Boston, she was determined to capture the beauty of New England, its’ architecture, nature and people. From cozy neighborhoods to coastal villages, every building tells a story, every street corner conceals a burst of color, which Marina captures with her sketches, some done on location, finicky New England weather permitting. Marina’s sketches become prints, postcards and stickers that she sells in her Urban Colors Art Studio online shop.

Materials and Techniques: My favorite mode of creation is to sketch on location. I like immersing myself in the life of a city, setting up my folding stool in front of a picturesque building or famous landmark, and sketching the city and life around me in ink and watercolor. When the weather is not cooperating, I paint from photographs that I take myself. I enjoy amplifying bright colors in my paintings and adding bits of vibrant city life, such as pedestrians and bicyclists. Cobblestones, lamp posts and coastal towns are some of my favorite subjects to sketch and there is no shortage of them in New England.
