Sophia Giardina

Bio: I am a self-taught artist who grew up drawing and painting in all of my free time. I was born and raised in New York, but now reside in Quincy, Massachusetts. I’ve always had a passion for art (despite going to Providence College for Marketing) and took art classes whenever I could. I’ve experimented with graphite pencil drawings, watercolor portraits of dogs, and acrylic still-life paintings, but eventually wanted to challenge myself with abstract art. Abstract was difficult for me at first because there is no map or reference, just your imagination. Experimenting with different styles, however, is what led me to create some of my favorite pieces.

Materials and Techniques: apply dry wall plaster (aka spackle) on canvas and then create texture using different types of tools – forks, scrapers, hair clips, spoons. Once dried, I use acrylic paint to bring the work to life - I particularly love using bright and vibrant colors. I finalize every painting with a gloss or matte varnish depending on the look I want.
